“The centre will be functional from this academic year and is being set up as per the suggestion of the human resource ministry,” the spokesperson said.

“Full-time, part-time, distance education and on-line courses will be available to suit different categories of learners,” the spokesperson added.

“Initially, there will be undergraduate courses with various components like spoken language, literary language, morphology and grammar,” IGNOU Vice Chancellor V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai said.

“Later, diploma programmes will also be developed followed by masters and Ph.D. programmes,” he said.

As of now only Mumbai University and Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati University, Ajmer, offer Sindhi language and literature up to masters and Ph.D. levels.

According to IGNOU, the centre will focus on making the youth conscious of Sindhi literary and cultural heritage through seminars and meetings with experts.

Sindhi is one of the major literary languages of India, recognized in the eighth schedule of the constitution.
