Singapore : In a novel approach to controlling illegal roadside parking in Singapore, authorities here are going to set up CCTV cameras along roads on a trial basis.
The initiative is being taken by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, Xinhua reported.
The authority called a tender last week seeking contractors to conduct a six-month trial at two locations along public roads, the Straits Times said, adding that it remained unclear where these sites were.
Once set up, the CCTV system will be able to capture the licence plate details of the vehicles parked in prohibited zones, round-the-clock and under all weather conditions.
The authority will review the quality of the images and videos captured during the trial and determine whether they can be used as evidence in court.
Authorities issue about 22,000 summons a month to motorists parking illegally.
The Land Transport Authority presently depends on traffic wardens, auxiliary police officers and its own uniformed enforcement officers to enforce parking regulations.
