Pakistan to import 100,000 tonnes of sugar

Islamabad : Pakistan will import 100,000 tonnes of sugar due to a shortage following floods that ravaged sugarcane crops in Sindh province.

The government Thursday allowed import of 100,000 tonnes of sugar, reported Dawn.

Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh presided over the meeting that decided to allow the sugar import.

An announcement said: “The ECC (Economic Coordination Committee) allowed import of one lakh tonnes of sugar instead of the proposed quantity of seven lakh tonnes by the Utility Stores Corporation to maintain stability in the market and ensure sugar availability.”

Authorities had sought import of 700,000 tonnes of sugar in view of damage to the sugarcane crop, said sources.
