“Tunisia congratulates the Libyan people for their glorious victory and has confidence the new Libya will re-establish security and stability on its territory,” Xinhua quoted the statement — carried by state-run press agency TAP — as saying.

It also stressed Tunisia’s “constant backing of Libya in this decisive historic stage”, as well as its commitment to “help Libyan people achieve its noble national objectives”.

After news of Gaddafi’s death, many Tunisians waved Libyan flags and honked their cars in support of Libyan demonstrators celebrating in front of the Libyan embassy in Tunis.
