London : The United Kingdom has announced additional funding of five million pounds for the victims of the devastating cyclone that has struck Bangladesh and caused deaths of over one thousand people.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister Lord Malloch-Brown, while expressing grief on the destruction wrought on Bangladesh by the cyclone said the extra funding announced by the Department for International Development will go towards UN efforts in that country.
He said the money will go towards helping those already recovering from devastating floods in August to deal with the impact of Cyclone Sidr.
The UK has given a total of 7.2 million pounds towards disaster relief in Bangladesh this year. The money will help UN agencies and local NGOs provide water tablets, embankment repairs, foot and mouth vaccines and fertiliser and cash for work to help people regain their livelihoods.
He said : “ As friends of Bangladesh and its people we share a determination to rebuild communities. Our ties are deep. We have offered our immediate support to relief efforts through the UN and stand ready to provide more assistance, as and when required.”
