Kasargod (Kerala) : With the protest against the entry of retail giants gathering momentum, the Kanhanagad Municipality, in this northern district of Kerala, has decided to cancel the licence of a Spencer’s retail outlet in the town.
A meeting of municipal councillors of all political parties took the decision Monday.
The Spencer’s, a unit of RPG group, has been functioning in Kanhangad for the last six months and various groups had organised agitations for the closure of the outlet.
“The meeting has decided to forward a proposal to the municipal council to cancel the licence. On Dec 1 the council is expected to take up the matter and a notice will be issued to the company,” M.A. Khalid, the municipal chairman, told IANS.
“There is a provision in the law that empowers municipalities to cancel the licence if an institution is causing threat to public tranquillity. There have been many agitations for the closure of this shop,” Khalid said.
“The company may approach the court against this but we have to take action considering the public sentiment,” he added.
On Nov 24, people armed with iron rods had attacked a Spencer’s outlet at Kozhikode, 200 km south of here, smashing glass panels.
