Kolkata: Shahanshah Jehangir, National Secretary of Indian Union Muslim League has written letters to leading corporations of India and Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) asking them to voluntarily provide quota for Muslims in their companies.

The letter sent earlier this month asks the private sector to introduce affirmative measures in their employment policy that would enable Muslim youths to get jobs in their companies. Mr. Jehangir also suggested utilizing Corporate Social Responsibility divisions of the corporations to engage in skill building and training of Muslim boys and girls.

Mr. Jehangir argued his case by stating that the size of the Indian Muslim market is over 150 million. If this was not enough he reminded the companies of the size of the world Muslim population. With 56 Muslim countries and significant presence in Europe and the US, Muslim market has been “relatively untapped” and represents “a tremendous opportunity.”

With more Indian companies than ever before involved in overseas market expansion, this may be the right time for them to hire more Muslim employees not only as a social responsibility but because it makes better business sense. “More representation of Indian Muslims in your organization can give you a competitive edge in marketing to this huge untapped market,” wrote Mr. Jehangir.

It remains to be seen how corporations will respond to this suggestion.
