London : A Taliban militant, who killed NATO soldiers in Afghanistan and supplied the outfit with weapons, has managed to stay in Britain, claiming he will be punished for deserting the terror group if he returns home.
In May 2010, 30-year-old Zareen Ahmadzai entered Britain illegally in the back of a lorry, The Sun reported.
Ahmadzai killed NATO soldiers with a Kalashnikov rifle in war-torn Helmand province. He served in the outfit for three years after his father, a commander in Helmand, was killed by US soldiers.
The British Home Office rejected Ahmadzai’s claim for asylum, and he was locked up at the Harmondsworth removal centre in west London while awaiting deportation.
But Ahmadzai managed to overturn the case on the grounds that his life would be at risk if he returned to Afghanistan.
After losing his first appeal against the Home Office decision to deport him, Ahmadzai took his case to the Upper Tribunal Immigration and Asylum Chamber.
Ahmadzai claims he was tortured when he tried to leave the Taliban.
He said he managed to escape the country, but cannot return because his life would be in danger.
The report said Ahmadzai was now free to live anywhere in Britain.
A UK Border Agency spokesman said they were “extremely disappointed” with the court’s decision, and that they did not believe Ahmadzai needed or “deserved refuge” in the country.
