Aligarh: Aligarh Muslim University has cut down s number of total annual holidays from existing 30 to 25, drawing protest from Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
AMU administration in a written statement sought to clarify the “Government of India has authorized only 17 holidays with an addition of 3 restricted holidays.”
It further added, keeping in mind the mandatory gazetted holidays, some holidays are reduced by the University to “increase number of days available for academic pursuit.”
AMU sought to justify its decision by giving example of Delhi based Jamia Millia Islamia that has total 26 holidays annually.
However, keeping in view of the “sentiments of the majority and the affected students,” the university administration has decided to observe holiday on Mahashivratri, earlier removed from list along with Raksha Bandhan.
The holiday for Holi has been, however, reduced from two to one. In addition, the birthday of Hazrat Ali will also be observed as a holiday while the holiday for Eidul Adha will be reduced from three to two.
