Patna : Jails across Bihar were put on high alert Monday, a day after around 300 Maoists carried out an audacious jailbreak in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh.
The state home department issued directives to all jail superintendents to beef up security. “All jails have been asked to strengthen security,” home department sources said.
Hundreds of Maoists, including their self-styled commanders, zonal commanders and area commanders are lodged in 56 prisons across the state.
Police do not want to take any chances after intelligence reports warned of a Jehanabad-like jailbreak when around 300 inmates, including 150 Maoists, had escaped in 2005.
Inspector General (Prisons) Sandip Paundrik said district magistrates and superintendents of police have been asked to beef up security of jails under their jurisdiction.
The administration has made extra security arrangements in Gaya, Beur, Jehanabad, Masaurhi, Motihari, Jamui, Bagh, Begusarai, Bettiah and Sitamarhi jails.
