New Delhi : Congress legislators from Nagaland Tuesday met President Pratibha Patil and demanded dismissal of the Nagaland People’s Front (NPF)-led government in the state, saying the vote of confidence it won last week was “unconstitutional”.

Sixteen legislators led by Congress leader I. Imkong asked the president to intervene to allow the newly-formed Nagaland Progressive Alliance (NPA), led by his party, to form the government in the state.

The Congress and dissident members of the NPF have formed the NPA.

The state legislators earlier met Home Minister Shivraj Patil on the same issue.

Although the NPF-led Democratic Alliance survived a vote of confidence last week, the Congress-led opposition alleges that it won the trust vote because of the “partisan” role of the assembly speaker who disallowed seven NPF legislators to vote against the government.

Imkong said even the independents, who backed the NPF but discontinued their support, were not allowed to vote in the trust vote that took place on Dec 13.
