Colombo : Fierce fighting in the northern Sri Lankan territory in the last few weeks have left at least 25 Tamil rebels and one government soldier dead in the last 24 hours, according to military spokespersons in this capital.
The most violent clashes are taking place in Mannar, Jaffna, and Vavuniya districts, which define the territory occupied by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and administrated by the Sri Lankan government.
According to a military release published in Colombo, Sri Lankan troops also had nine soldiers wounded.
The military forces destroyed three rebel bunkers in Jaffna peninsula, in the most recent of clashes.
Also over the weekend, combats, air raids, ground and sea operations were staged in Jaffna, as well as in Vavuniya and Mannar districts.
Seventy-two rebels and four soldiers died in those armed clashes.
In an offensive against the insurgency zones, the army increased its attacks since the government announced on January 2 the end of cease of fire, which was signed in February 2002 with the LTTE.
