New Delhi: Apropos External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s remarks demanding Bhagwad Gita be declared as national scripture, ET Muhammad Basheer, MP from Ponnani in Kerala, and state secretary of IUML has said her remark could dig the foundation of secularist nation.
“None of the countrymen disrespect the Holy scripture, (but) her remark can dig the foundation of a secularist, pluralist nation and such a statement from a Union Minister cannot be apologized,” Basheer, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader said.
The BJP leader and Union Minister had two days ago said at a public meeting that “PM Narendra Modi handed over the Gita to US president Barack Obama two months before (now) only an official declaration is pending to declare the Holy book as a national scripture.”
Though the Kerala MP had sought permission of the Speaker for an emergency motion in connection with the remark; it was denied and two other issues were tabled.
Basheer has stormed the Parliament on Thursday against Swaraj’s provocative remark, which had triggered other opposition members as well to come forward against it. The matter was finally debated in the Zero hour. The intervention of the MP was followed by a ruckus in the Parliament when he questioned Swaraj’s attack on the canons of secularism.
“This BJP government cannot alleviate the communal wrath in the country. And instead, for the sake of political achievement, they are boosting the communal forces by adding fuel into the fire,” he said.
