Communists Plan Third Indian Political Force

New Delhi : The Communist Party of India (Marxist) is planning an alternative, with a similar platform to that of the left, and the two main political forces of this country, the Congress Party (CP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The idea of this third long-term alternative has been included in a resolution that the CPI(M) will submit for debate in its coming 21st Congress, and was brought to light by its leader Prakash Karat.

After announcing the document, Karat said his organization is holding talks with other parties and organizations to achieve that goal.

In fact, that resolution could mean realignment of forces in the Indian political leadership, the government of which is in the hands of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), which created the CP to shape the government after the 2004 elections, supported by the CPI(M).

The resolution also generates concern in the CP, faced with the 2009 parliamentary elections.

Karat highlighted that the CPI(M) does not share the policies of the CP, the historic organization that emerged with the Gandhi dynasty, and the main force of the government UPA, or those followed opposition BJP, conservatively oriented.

He said his party will keep relations with all secular parties, which are not the CP or the BJP, to fight a united struggle and joint actions about issues of common interest that favor the people.

He asserted that the CPI(M) will continue adopting tactics to isolate and defeat the BJP, and said it would not accept an alliance or united front with the CP.

“For this, that party would have to reach understanding with the left, about popular economic policies, besides defending national sovereignty and carry out an independent foreign policy,” he said.

In its first reaction to the CPI(M)’s plan, the CP ruled out the proposal’s feasibility, and said a secular alliance in India can not be agreed without its participation.
