Islamabad : Police on Wednesday stopped former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from meeting deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who has been under house arrest since November 3.
President Pervez Musharraf had sacked Mr Chaudhry and around 50 more judges of the Supreme Court and high courts after they refused to show allegiance to him.
Nawaz Sharif along with party leaders tried to visit the sacked Chief Justice at judges colony in Islamabad but the police stopped him while erecting barricades on the main road leading to his residence.
The police also locked the main gate of the residence of the deposed Chief Justice.
“I will restore Iftikhar Muhamamd Chaudhry as the Chief Justice after coming into power,” Mr Sharif told around 500 of his party supporters.
“Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry is still the constitutional and legal Chief Justice and I do not accept any other Chief Justice,” he said.
He said the government of President Musharraf is saying that judges are free to move but the nation saw today that judges are under house arrest. He said the whole nation is with Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudry.
Meanwhile Mr Sharif speaking at a news conference urged President Musharraf to resign before a motion for his impeachment is tabled in the parliament.
“Pakistan is facing the worst crisis due to the policies of President Musharraf,” he said.
“The situation would not deteriorate so much if there was a democratic government in the country”.
