Nairobi : A Kenyan opposition parliamentarian has been shot dead in what his colleagues described as a political murder in the violence that has been raging since the disputed presidential elections last month.
Mugabe Were, legislator for the Nairobi constituency of Embakasi, was shot late Monday night as he was waiting for his guard to open the security gate. He was declared dead upon arriving at hospital.
“People are seeing it as a political killing,” said Salim Lone, spokesperson for the Orange Democratic Movement, which claims that last month’s polls were rigged. “This is part of the violence that has ravaged this country since the elections.”
Police have said they are investigating the crime, which comes ahead of further meetings between opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Mwai Kibaki set for Tuesday afternoon.
Violence continues to rock the normally peaceful East African nation, with ethnic clashes erupting in cities across the country.
Some 800 people have been killed and 250,000 displaced in the ongoing chaos.
