New Delhi : At least six people were killed and nearly 60 others injured in a suicide attack at the main railway station in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo Sunday.
The attack was carried out by a woman suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at the station this afternoon, Press Trust of India reported quoting a Sri Lankan military spokesperson.
The LTTE’s suicide bomber blew herself up resulting in the casualties, he said. The railway station is located in the heart of Colombo, he said.
The Sri Lankan security forces have cordoned off the area and have launched an operation, the news agency said.
This is the second major attack by the LTTE in two days, ahead of Sri Lanka’s 60th Independence Day celebrations.
Yesterday, 20 Buddhist pilgrims were killed and 50 injured in a powerful bomb explosion in a bus, triggered by LTTE, in central Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan government unilaterally withdrew from the ceasefire with LTTE couple of weeks back and intensified its military operation in rebel strongholds in Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka.
