This is the biggest number of requests registered in all the history of the Olympic Games, although they will only need 70,000 volunteers for the 2008 Olympic, and another 30,000 for the Paralympics.

More than a million people have also given their services to work as volunteers in the host cities for competitions: Beijing, Quigdao, Hong Kong, Tianjin, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao.

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games launched a campaign to recruit supporting personnel in August 2006.

Starting in March 2007, the summons was spread to Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao. In this group Chinese residents in other countries having a practical knowledge of the Mandarin Chinese language are included.
