Nairobi : After meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan denied any foreign interference in Kenyan domestic affairs on Monday, and said they were in Kenya “in solidarity.”
Annan´s statements were understood as a response to accusations of interference made by Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula, who said the Kenyan political crisis is a domestic affair that will not accept pressure or interference from abroad.
Wetangula´s statements were made after US President George W. Bush recommended that the governing of Kenya should be shared.
The foreign minister asserted today that Kenya “is cheered by friends who give us advice, but we don’t accept anyone putting a gun to our heads.”
The contretemps may affect Anan’s role of mediation, which has advanced to the point the parties agreeing to end the disturbances begun December 27, which have caused more than 1,000 deaths and 300,000 displaced persons.
However, no understanding has been reached yet between followers of opposition leader Raila Odinga, head of the Orange Democratic Movement, and current Kenyan Mwai Kibaki, whose re-election is protested by his rivals.
