Lucknow : As many as 300 inmates of the Lucknow district jail proceeded on a hunger strike Sunday to protest officials’ “partisan” role after a clash between two groups of under-trials.
According to the police, trouble began when the jail staff chose to side with a particular group of under-trials known to be also supported by certain criminal gangs.
“What began as a minor clash between two sets of under-trials Saturday turned into a free-for-all between the weaker group of under-trials and the jail staff, following which six jail wardens and 24 inmates were injured,” a police official said.
To protest against what they termed as partisan role of the jail officials, a large band of 300 under-trials observed a hunger strike Sunday.
Meanwhile, one of the injured under-trials was shifted to the Balrampur Hospital Sunday.
