Bagdhad : The British artilley shelled the southern Iraqi city of Basora, killing one woman and a baby, the Iraqi police reported on Wednesday.
According to the source, the British soldiers opened fire in response to a missile attack against the city’s airport where they are being relocated prior to evacuation.
The police noted the rockets launched by the foreign troops also wounded four other children near the bullet-riddled house where the baby and the woman were killed.
London defense Ministry announced an investigation and talked about a possible “faulty rocket”, noted European press media.
UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has ordered withdrawal of British troops from Iraq, where 175 British soldiers have been killed by the ressistance since the March, 2003 US-led invasion.
