New Delhi : A retired solider of the Indian Army has been arrested on charges of espionage and for allegedly providing classified documents to an agent of Pakistan’s Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) in the capital, the police said Wednesday.
Sleuths of the Special Cell of Delhi Police arrested Javed Ahmed, 42, resident of Hapur, Uttar Pradesh, from Jama Masjid area. He came there to give some documents related to the Indian Army to the ISI agent.
But the ISI agent and a mediator, Salaudin, managed to give the police a slip.
“A trap was laid near a park in Jama Masjid area. A team spotted Javed Ahmed and apprehended him with a suitcase and two books on the Indian armed forces containing classified information,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Alok Kumar.
“Ahmed, who served in the army for more than 17 years, during his interrogation said he had supplied classified information to the ISI agent five or six times in the past,” Kumar added.
The police said Ahmad joined the army in 1984 as sepoy and retired in the year 2001. In 2006, he came in contact with Salaudin, who lives near his house.
Salaudin motivated Ahmad to work for an ISI agent in Delhi.
Kumar said on the directions of his handler, Ahmed visited various army establishments in the country and collected sensitive information and passed it on to him.
