Khaliq-ur-Rehman, an inspector of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), was ambushed when he was returning home after offering Friday prayers at the town of Charsadda, police officer Muhammad Mukhtar said.

The assailants fled after the incident.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

Local militants are suspected to be behind such killings.

Police said the slain IB official received two bullets, one on chest which resulted into his death.

He did not offer any comment as to who are behind the murder.

It is the second murder of intelligence officials in the same region in less than four months.

A senior IB officer Nisar Ali Khan was killed by unidentified gunmen in January in district Charsadda while he was going to a mosque for prayers.

The police had blamed a local Taliban member for the killing of Khan, who was later killed in a suspected police encounter.

Unidentified gunmen had shot dead another official of intelligence agency in Nowshehra, another major city in the country’s northwest, six months ago.

It is thought that the intelligence officials are targeted for their monitoring of suspected militants.
