Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, leaders of Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) respectively, began talks to finalise the most-controversial issue of judges restoration in their partnership.

The main focus of the meeting remains settlement of the differences on moving the constitutional package for the independence of the judiciary along with the resolution for the restoration of deposed judges.

According to press reports today, the two leaders failed to reach an accord on Monday to restore judges as envisaged in an agreement signed before forming a coalition in the hilly Murree area.

Reports accused Zardari of back-tracking on his words and creating hurdles before reinstating judges, for unknown reasons.

President Musharraf suspended the Chief Justice as he was expected to invalidate his presidential candidacy and also other senior judges of the Supreme Court and High Court who refused to endorse his emergency rule.

The deadlock pertained to the date of restoration of the deposed judges and fixing the age of retirement of the judges of the Supreme Court and high courts, according to press reports.
