OIC voices concern over escalating violence in Somalia

Mogadishu : The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) Prof. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu has expressed grave concern at the latest escalating fighting in Mogadishu which has claimed tens of lives and wounded many more others including innocent civilians. Prof. Ihsanoglu, who regretted the upsurge in the deadly clashes in populated areas of the Somali capital in which heavy weapons and artillery are used leading to enormous destruction of lives and properties, called for an immediate end to the hostilities.

The OIC Chief reminded the parties of the already dire humanitarian crisis in the country and urged them to refrain from armed confrontation which only complicates the prevailing serious situation, according to an OIC statement. While reiterating the determination of the OIC to continue to contribute to the return of durable peace and security to Somalia, the Secretary General renewed his appeal to all Somalis to abandon violence and embrace dialogue as the only means of resolving disputes.
