UNSC strongly condemns terrorist attack targeting ceremony attended by Karzai

United Nations : The Security Council on Monday “condemned in the strongest terms” the terrorist attack yesterday in Kabut that targeted an official ceremony attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, Parliamentarians, diplomats and UN officials.Karzai escaped the assassination attempt but two people were killed in the attack and a dozen more were injured.

In a statement to the press, council president Dumisani Kumalo of South Africa said council members reiterated that no terrorist act “can reverse the path toward peace, democracy and reconstruction” in Afghanistan, which is supported by the Afghan people and government and the international community.

Noting that the attack was claimed by the Taliban, the members underlined the need to bring perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors of this “reprehensible” act of terrorism to justice, and urged all states to cooperate actively with the Afghan authorities in this regard.Reaffirming their commitment to further reinforce Afghan’s development and security, the members also reiterated their concern at the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida, illegal armed groups, criminals and those involved in the illicit narcotics production and trafficking to the local population, national security forces and international assistance efforts.
