They said the baby girl was administered the vaccine April 23. With this, the vaccine death toll in Tamil Nadu has reached five.

Four infants had died last Wednesday in Tiruvallur district, 600 km north of here, following administration of the vaccine.

Central Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss cancelled all vaccinations as a result and ordered a probe.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had Thursday announced a compensation of Rs.300,000 to each family that had lost an infant.

The state and central governments had, however, claimed there was no negligence on their part pointing out that thousands of inoculations had taken place the same day all over Tamil Nadu.
