Washington : The US House Committee on Veteran Affairs accused the government agency in charge of dealing with former servicemen of ignoring the risk of suicide faced by many of them.
According to Robert Filner (Dem-CA), who is chariman of the US House Committee on Veteran Affairs, to neglect this situation is a criminal mistake.
We are facing a life/death matter here, handled with neglect, he said during a hearing to discuss the issue in Capitol Hill.
In his opinion, the US Department of Veteran Affairs is showing lack of interest to the high rate of suicides among veterans or simply concealing the number of former servicemen who made this decision.
According to figures provided by the said department, at least 1,000 veterans attempt suicide every month.
