In a weekly meeting with the executive, the prime minister affirmed that they are close “or at a crossroads” of deciding on reverting the existing situation south of Israel which he said cannot continue.

Last Wednesday Olmert threatened to retaliate against rocket fire from Palestinian territory after one hit downtown Ashkelon.

He issued the warning in an event commemorating the 60th anniversary of that State expressing the firm support of Tel Aviv by president George W. Bush.

Olmert considered the attack intolerable and unacceptable and made the commitment to take the necessary measures to stop those rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.

Israelis and Palestinians had begun talks on November 2007 in Annapolis, US, and agreed to reach a peace agreement before the end of this year.

However, these have been hindered by the aggressive position of Tel Aviv in occupied territories and its lack of interest.

In the past six months Israeli authorities sent out bids for new housing construction in Palestinian lands and increased military actions against Gaza and the West Bank, killing more than 400 persons.

Commemorating the 60th anniversary of Nakba from the Parliament in Ramallah Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, said in a radio broadcast last Thursday that he was prepared to hold peace talks with Israel.

Only the end of occupation can bring security, he said, referring to the continuing policy of colonization.

“Above all” he added “in the vicinity of Jerusalem, where they intend to set up the capital of the future Palestinian state.”
