Tehran : Iran Friday asked US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama not to encourage Israel with “unrealistic” charges against the Islamic country and its “peaceful” nuclear programme, IRNA reported Friday.
“The peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme is undeniable,” foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini told reporters at a press briefing.
Obama Wednesday told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) that there was “no greater threat” to Israel than Iran, and warned of consequences if Iran refused to stop its nuclear programme and support to terrorism in the region.
He added: “This (Obama’s comment) is a fully one-sided and unreal assessment, is in open contradiction with realities concerning peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme and is unjustified.”
He decried Obama’ comments as “opportunistic attitudes” and said they contradict the presidential candidate’s election promise to confront political lobbies in the US.
“The comment stems from Zionists’ (Israel’s) insinuations and the candidate’s wrong concept,” the spokesman said.
“The government’s policies are in accord with well-established international principles and values, including the UN Charter, and the policies will continue to be in force,” Hosseini said.
