Islamabad : Police foiled bombing plans by arresting six terrorists and a large quantity of explosives packed in three vehicles in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, some 30 km from the capital, officials said Friday.
Rehman Malik, security advisor to prime minister, said the arrests were made Thursday night in one of the densely populated areas of the city.
He refused to provide further details, saying these were “too sensitive” to be shared.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said the first vehicle was stopped during a routine patrol in Dhook Kala Khan area Thursday night and around 500 km of explosives were recovered.
Two other vehicles were seized later in the same area with about 600 km of explosives, detonators and automatic rifles.
The official claimed initial investigation showed the terrorists were planning to strike President Musharraf’s residence in Rawlapindi in three simultaneous bombings.
But the city police chief Rao Mohammed Iqbal refused to confirm the claim.
“We are interrogating a number of persons apprehended during the action and when solid information comes out we will share with the media,” he said.
The seizure came five days after a suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laden car next to the main entrance of the Danish embassy in Islamabad, killing six people, including a Danish citizen of Pakistani origin and two Pakistani employees of the embassy.
