Athens : Greece is continuing to be hit by aftershocks following Sunday’s earthquake, which killed two and injured 192, the country’s state television said on Monday.
The quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale, with an epicenter at the Peloponnese Peninsula some 205 km (127 miles) east of the capital Athens, destroyed over 50 buildings and damaged more than 200 others.
The area has been hit by a series of aftershocks measuring around 4.5 on the Richter scale. Seismologists have warned that more aftershocks are expected. People in the affected areas have been warned to stay outdoors.
The death toll lists a 55-year-old man, who died when his house collapsed, and an 80-year-old woman, who died of a heart attack on her way to hospital.
Of the 192 people injured, some 180 received treatment for minor injuries. Only 12 people were admitted to hospitals. Seven people, including a nine-year-old girl, were rescued from beneath the debris of collapsed buildings.
The national highway connecting the capital Athens with the southern city of Patras was blocked by falling rocks.
This January, a 6.5 earthquake jolted the Peloponnese Peninsula, but no deaths were reported. The last deadly earthquake hit Greece in 1999, and resulted in 143 deaths.
