Jajpur (Orissa) : The Orissa government Monday provided jobs to the kin of eight victims of a police firing on protestors of a Tata Steel project here.
The administration handed over the appointment letters to five of them in a ceremony at the Kalinga Nagar industrial complex as a part of the compensation package earlier announced, District Collector Dhiren Kumar Das told IANS.
“The others will be given the appointment letters in a day or two,” he said.
At least 14 tribals, including a high school student, were killed January 2, 2006, while protesting against construction of a boundary wall for the proposed six million tonne steel plant of Tata Steel at Kalinga Nagar, about 100 km from here.
The state government had earlier promised to provide employment to the next of kin of each of those killed in police firing, but on the basis of their qualifications and vacancies in government jobs.
“Earlier, we had provided jobs to two women and they have started working,” Das said.
Six women have been appointed clerks in the revenue and social welfare department and some others as class IV employees.
