Istanbul : The Turkish Justice and Development Party (AKP) is counting its last days in rule, following a decision by the Turkish Constitutional Court to look into practices by the party that oppose secularism.
Turkish newspaper “Zaman” on its website mentioned that the public prosecutor in the Turkish Court of Cassation, will present the verdict, followed by another day of closed-door sessions on Thursday, in the party’s defence.
Political observers conflict between the secularists and the AKP reached its climax last year, precisely during the election of Turkey’s President Abdullah Gul and when the Constitutional Court early June, amended legislation regarding the right to wear Islamic headscarves in Turkish universities.
An opinion poll organized by Turkish daily, “Milliyet,” indicated that a large number of Turks oppose the decision to end the reign of the ruling party, and that it remains first in the minds of the public.
Another poll conducted by A and G research, between the dates June 14-15, to which 2,403 people where participants; 53.3 percent were against the immobilization of the AKP, while 37.7 percent said that it would cause economical and political havoc in the country.
