Poor Muslim students making history in Maharashtra

By TwoCircles.net staff reporter,

Nagpur : Babu is what his parents call him but his actual name is Mehdi Ghulam Hasnain who has topped Maharashtra night high schools scoring 88.15%. Whenever his mother Nirgis Khatoon said, “babbo tum merit mein aana (Babu, you should come in merit), he used to reply, “maa, merit list band ho chuki hai” (mother! Merit list has closed). She would get upset by such response but God has replied her prayers and now Mehdi is on of the top students of the state.

Mehdi’s father Ghulam Hasnain is working at post and telegraph office in Nagpur. He is upbeat with the success of his son. “We knew that Mehdi will get through with flying colours but this is unbelievable and more than what we ever thought.” He thanked Nayeemuddin Akhtar, principal of Mehdi’s school for guiding him and providing him best support.

Mehdi Ghulam Hasnain is sharing the honor of being first in the night high schools of the state with Manoj Kumar Uday Pratap of SVSS night high school of Ichal Karanji (Kolhapur). Mehdi was studing in Shivaji night high school only to get contemporary education. During the day he used to attend madrasa for religious education. “I was studying in Jamti Jamia Rasoole Azam Arabic and Persian Collage. I have finished the course for Almiyat and now preparing for Fazil course. After attending my Arabic college I used to go to night school for my class 10th preparation. I came to Nagpur from Kamti six months before my SSC exam,” informed Mehdi while talking to media. He is very thankful to Almighty Allah for his success. He also thanked his parents and teachers for encouraging and motivating him for the exam.

Will he become another Wasimur Rahman? Yes, he says. “I want to become an IAS officer.” Wasimur Rahman, a graduate of Darul Uloom Deoband, cleared Civil Services Exam 2007, and became first madrasa graduate to do so.

Mehdi’s principal is proud that one of his students has achieved the top position. He told media: “Mehdi’s financial condition is not well, and that’s why his parents admitted him in Arabic madrasa instead of a school. However, Mehdi proved that hard work is the only key to success.”

There can be several Mehdis if they are given chance.

Another student to do extraordinary is Tauqirul Hasan of Malegaon. He stood first in Nasik Board amongst the students of night high schools.

A student of JAT night high school, Tauqir scored 86.92%. His father is TV mechanic and mother does some embroidery work at home. Tauqir used to work with his father all the day and attend his class in the evening. His financial condition is so bad that many a time he had to go to work in power looms. But he never lost courage. Tauqir wants to become an engineer.
