Kiev : Members of the Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine blocked the way to a group of US troops who arrived in Odessa to take part in the Sea Breeze 2008 maneuvers, organized by NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.)
Many of the hundreds of demonstrators lay down in the road leading to the Officers’ House in Odessa to impede the passage of vehicles carrying the soldiers, the First TV Channel reported.
Police forces tried unsuccessfully to clear the way, and the vehicles finally had to turn off their route, said the source.
Secretary of the regional organization of the Progressive Socialist Party in Odessa, Olga Kovalenko, said they will continue protesting NATO presence in Ukraine.
Germany, Armenia, Azerbaidzhan, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, the United States, France, Britain, Georgia, Greece, Latvia, Macedonia, Turkey and Ukraine take part in Sea Breeze 2008.
The foreign presence consists of 1,000 troops, 15 ships, two submarines, four planes and four choppers, the sources confirmed.
