Kabul : Afghan National Security Force and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in a joint operation killed a Taliban leader in Now Zad district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province, said a statement issued by ISAF Thursday.
Mullah Bismullah Akhund was a senior Taliban leader responsible for supplying weapons and IEDs (Improvised Explosive Device) that have killed civilians and ISAF forces in northern Helmand, the statement said.
Bismullah was closely associated with local Taliban leader Mullah Rahim, whose brother was also killed during this operation on July 12, it added.
Afghanistan has been the scene of increasing insurgency led by Taliban militants in terms of suicide bombings and ambushes though a 70,000-strong foreign troops are deployed.
Conflicts and Taliban-led insurgency have killed more than 2,000 people including over 700 civilians so far this year in Afghanistan.
