Bangalore : The explosive material used in Friday’s serial blasts here and the places where they occurred – in garbage dumps or in storm water drains – has baffled the police and made them wonder whether it was a trial run for bigger attacks or a mere act to create panic in the IT hub.
In one place, the explosives were kept in a park that is usually deserted in the afternoon.
Police say preliminary investigations show ammonium nitrate, nuts and bolts and cement chips were used to cause the explosions.
Police and the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Karnataka are not viewing the blasts as an act of terror. A woman was killed and seven people were injured in the seven blasts that hit the city Friday afternoon.
Both Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and the city Police Commissioner Shankar Bidri say the low-intensity blasts were well-planned acts of anti-social and anti-national elements aimed at creating panic and terror.
They also see the explosions as an attempt to damage Bangalore’s reputation as a peaceful city as it is the country’s IT hub and a large number of foreign nationals are working here.
Police say they had no prior intelligence tip off about possible blasts.
State Home Minister V.S. Acharya also said the government had not received any tip off from union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal, who said Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had been alerted about possible terror attacks.
