Tehran : Sharif University of Technology ranked third for the fourth consecutive year at the 15th International Students Mathematics Contests held in Bulgaria, said the university chancellor, Saeed Sohrabpour.
The 8-member team dispatched by the university to the event won seven gold medals, one bronze medal competing with 90 teams from different universities, he said.
“Prior to the Bulgarian event, the team stood first at Iran’s Students Olympiad,” he said, adding that Iran’s Association of Mathematics also organizes competitions each year in which the university has ranked first for the 21 consecutive years.
Mathematics contest are usually held in East Europe, which very strong at this discipline, he noted.
Mostafa Einollah-Zadeh, Ali Khazali, Nima Ahmadipour-Anari, Jaber Zare’zadeh, Behzad Mehrdad, Seyyed Jalil Kazemi-Tabar and Omid Hatami won gold medals while Mohammad Javad Moghaddam bagged the bronze medal, Sohrabpour said.
Meanwhile, head of the student team dispatched to Bulgaria, Haji Mirsadeqi said that 280 contenders from 90 universities in the world participated in the event.
“This year, classification method underwent changes compared to those in the earlier rounds; otherwise our team would have come second,” he said.
Hungary and Russia ranked first and second respectively at the Bulgarian event, he noted.
The 15th International Students Mathematics Contests was held Bulgaria from July 25-31.
