Islamabad : Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Monday that the just-concluded regional summit in Colombo has helped ease tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The two-day 15th Summit of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) concluded in Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Sunday. Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai held talks on the sidelines of the summit, and agreed to continue talks.
The talks came amid tensions following allegations by the Afghan side that Pakistan’s intelligence agency was behind a bomb attack on Indian embassy in Kabul.
“The visit has helped in (reducing) tension and dispelling many apprehensions and misunderstandings with Afghanistan,” the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) quoted Gilani as saying after his return from Colombo.
The Afghan president said Afghanistan was ready to remove differences with Pakistan, Gilani told reporters.
Gilani also met with his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh on the sidelines of the SAARC summit, and the two prime ministers pledged to engage in peace talks.
