Windhoek : The Swapo-Party has rubbished recent media reports about brewing political tensions and factionalism within the ruling party leadership as mere rumours and fabrications, Namibian news agency, NAMPA, reported.
Swapo’s Secretary-General Pendukeni Iivula-Ithana told reporters at the party headquarters on Monday that the ruling party is ‘solidly united like a rock’ despite media reports to the contrary.
“The attempts by certain known media operators to ferment division and thereby attempt to reverse the gains of the Namibian revolution through political smear campaigns with a clear purpose of misleading the people of Namibia and dividing the Swapo-Party leadership will fail,” said Iivula-Ithana.
The Swapo-Party spokesperson made the statement in reaction to reports claiming that the party’s last Central Committee sitting, which took place the past weekend, was tense as a result of confrontations and clashes between factions in the party leadership.
The media reports also highlighted some contagious issues supposedly raised at the central committee meeting such as the conflict between Deputy Prime Minister Dr Libertine Amathila and her former aide, alleged poor performance of the Office of the Prime Minister and claims that former President Sam Nujoma still holds considerable influence over the party leadership.
But Iivula-Ithana did not include any of these issues in her presentation of the central committee meeting outcome.
Instead, she warned that the Central Committee had urged all the party’s rank and file not to be misled by enemy propaganda.
“The Central Committee noted that the Swapo-Party and its government continues to be under deliberate onslaught from retrogressive, reactionary and negative forces that aim to undermine our genuine political victory against apartheid colonialism,” said Iivula-Ithana.
