India Boosts Security for Holiday

New Delhi : Security is being stepped up Monday in the Indian capital and neighboring villages to prevent terrorist attacks during the August 15 Independence Day celebrations.

Hundreds of police officers are being deployed in New Delhi and security has been tightened at the entrance of markets where vehicles are checked before parking.

Officers and paramilitary forces were posted around the Red Fort, Old New Delhi, where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address the nation.

The Times of India journal reported that National Security snipers will be posted in the ancient and impressive 17th-century fort during the celebrations.

Public buildings like the Parliament, the international airport, train stations, interstate bus terminals and the subway will also be under strict surveillance.
