Pakistan: coalition partners, people to decide Musharraf’s fate, says Zardari

Islamabad : Co-Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Senator Asif Ali Zardari Friday said that it is up to the leadership of coalition partners and the people of Pakistan to decide the fate of President Musharraf after he is impeached. In an exclusive interview with a private television channel the PPP Co-Chairman said that he has however advised the President to resign and get out of system more than two months ago.

He said the PPP being a democratic party has always taken mature decisions and it was under this thinking that the President was advised to resign.

“I am too small a person to say something about safe passage to President Musharraf because there are seasoned and heavyweight politician in the coalition” Zardari said in respond to a question adding a decision to this affect would be made with the consensus of coalition partners.

To a question, he said the murder of Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto would be probed by the efficient experts under the supervision of United Nations and hopefully the facts would come on surface with the passage of time.

He said the investigation of Benazir Bhutto’s murder case will not be individual specific.

Zardari said that Justice Nasim Hussan Shah himself admitted that he has given wrong verdict against PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto but the PPP has never filed a case of judicial murder against him.

Zardari said that he has no differences with deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary and he will not become a hurdle in the career of anybody.

There are some constitutional obligations which once settled the pre-november 3 judiciary including Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary would be restored.

Responding to a question he said the PPP being a major party has the right to nominate a President of its choice adding but a decision to this effect would be made jointly by the coalition partners.

He said the party would never abondan its friends whatsoever the circumstance are.

To another question, he said the next president himself will demand the removal of clause 58(2)(B) from the constitution.

Responding yet to another question the PPP Co-Chairman said, that Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani is fully empowered as far the governance is concerned adding however he has to follow the party line in policy matters.

He said that PPP is pursing a policy of national consensus under a defined strategy and there is a national government in place which represents all the democratic forces from the country.

Zardari said the people of tribal areas if financially empowered would not play as tools in the hands of terrorists.

They are brave and hardworking people and if given the opportunities they can contribute in the nation building activities befittingly.

He said that in future the accountability would be made through the parliament and the Public Accounts Committee under the Chairmanship of Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan would be made a fully autonomous and powerful institution.

He termed the unanimous passage of resolution against President Musharraf by the Sindh Assembly as an historical development.
