More arrested for staged killing; apex court defers CBI probe

New Delhi/Ahmedabad : As more Gujarat police officials were arrested Thursday over the November 2005 staged killing of Ahmedabad resident Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife's subsequent murder, the Supreme Court held that it was a "prima facie" fit case to be probed by the Central Bureau of investigation.

The apex court also gave the Gujarat police "some more time" to complete its probe into the incident and deferred a final order on the issue to May 15.

Islamabad : Pakistan Thursday successfully test-fired its 700 km range Hataf VII cruise missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads, an official said here.

Hataf VII, a terrain-hugging and radar-avoiding missile, can be fired from the French acquired Agosta submarine and also from the US fighter jets F-16s and F-17s.

Hataf VII is the latest missile in the Babur series that Pakistan is developing, reportedly with North Korean help. It was last tested in March this year.

Joint Committee of Muslim Oraganizations for Empowerment (JCMOE) was formed recently by various Muslim organizations. It demands implementation of the recommendations of Justice Sachar Committee report and Ranganath Misha Commission's recommendation for the empowerment of minorities including Muslims.

Gujarat must withdraw “freedom of religion act�

Ahmedabad : A non-governmental organisation here has welcomed the decision by the Gujarat Governor Nawal Kishore Sharma to return "The Gujarat Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Bill 2006". 

Prashant, the organisation working for human rights, justice and peace, in a statement issued here Wednesday, said, "The Bill is violative of the Constitutional Rights of a citizen and very divisive in nature."

New Delhi : Indian Muslims' representative organisations including Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Jamiat Ahl-e-Hadis-e-Hind and All India Milli Council have severely condemned the highly provocative statement made by US Republican Party candidate Tom Tancredo that the US should strike Islamic holy places, including Makkah and Madinah.

In a report published in the Urdu daily Hindustan Express, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Syed Arshad Madani termed the statement "very unfortunate".
