New Delhi: A woman member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) startled the Rajya Sabha Friday by suggesting that a woman should be the prime minister for five years and that 33 percent of seats in the union cabinet should be reserved for women.
"A woman should be the prime minister for five years. Also, 33 percent of seats in the cabinet should be reserved for women," Anusuiya Uikey maintained while participating in the over three-hour debate on the woman's reservation bill that the house later passed 186-1.

Ranchi : Eight women have been elected to the Jharkhand assembly this year, up from five in the last poll in 2005.
Out of the eight elected women legislators, three belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and one legislator each belongs to the Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress and Jai Bharat Samanta Party (JBSP). The three women legislators from the BJP are Vimala Pradhan, Menka Sardar and Kunti Devi who won the assembly seats from Simdega, Potka and Jharia respectively.

Lucknow: A woman was arrested Wednesday and a search was on for her husband after they allegedly held a six-year-old Dalit girl hostage for the past six months and tortured her, police said.
The matter came to light Sunday when police raided their home on a complaint by the girl's mother and rescued her.
"We were shocked to see the condition of the girl who had injuries and bruises all over her body. She could hardly walk," Paresh Pandey, superintendent of police (Trans Gomti), told reporters.

Chengdu : A 60-year-old woman was rescued at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday from rubble in Pengzhou, southwest China's Sichuan Province, more than 196 hours after the May 12 earthquake.
Wang Liqun, a retiree from the provincial capital of Chengdu, had lived on rainwater in the past days. She, still conscious when rescuers found her, was rushed to hospital.
Wang was inside a temple when the quake struck. She was hit by a falling girder in the head and had been in coma until last Tuesday, according to the rescue team from an air force regiment based in Chengdu.

Cologne (Germany) : Women and children caught up in the fighting in eastern Congo are in urgent need of help, the UN Children's Fund Unicef said Friday.
More than a quarter-of-a-million refugees fled the fighting in recent days between the Congolese Army and rebels under the leadership of General Laurent Nkunda.
Many children were separated from their parents, making them more vulnerable to abuse, Unicef said, adding that there was also a danger of young boys being forcibly recruited by armed groups when they are displaced.

New Delhi/Bhopal: Five women survivors of the ill-famous 1984 Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal today began an indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar here along with a thousand survivors and their children sitting in a dharna, demanding adequate compensation to the victims of the country’s worst industrial disaster.

Rights panel to probe tribal woman’s harassment

New Delhi : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has deputed a team to inquire into sexual harassment charges levelled by a tribal woman against a suspended senior police officer in Jharkhand.
The victim has also alleged threat to her life from the officer, a statement said.
The rights panel said that in her complaint, the tribal woman alleged sexual harassment by former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ranchi, P.S. Natarajan.
A criminal case was registered against the IGP and the trial of the case is pending in a court.

Woman arrested for jewellery theft

Ghaziabad: A woman was arrested here Saturday for allegedly stealing jewellery from highend outlets along with her male accomplice, who is still at large, police said.
The duo was identified as Babli Shahnaaz alias Bano, 42, and her brother-in-law Sajid Ali, 30.
Senior Superintendent of Police Raghuvir Lal said: "Sajid and Shahnaaz struck at highend jewellery outlets and mostly operated as a couple."
"In a planned manner, they would go to big jewellery outlets around lunchtime, when most of the sales staff was not around," Lal added.

No postal order for minority, women candidates in railway exams
