Srinagar : Journalists in the Kashmir Valley Wednesday condemned the media curbs imposed by the government following widespread violence during which some journalists were allegedly beaten by the security forces.
The Omar Abdullah government has “done everything to stop media persons from discharging their professional duties”, a statement of the Press Guild of Kashmir said.
The guild held a meeting here Wednesday and “denounced the curbs and the use of force against media persons”.
“In the wake of present turbulence, the government should have ensured free flow of information to keep people updated and to discourage rumour mongering. However, the reverse has happened,” the statement said.
The guild condemned the Tuesday attack by security forces on media persons during which at least 12 journalists were injured.
On Wednesday again, police thrashed some photojournalists at Press Enclave and snatched cameras from a few, the statement alleged.
It regretted that curfew passes issued to reporters were not being honoured by security forces.
“Not allowing media persons to move and cover the situation is tantamount to banning the media and that is what the state government has done indirectly,” the statement said.
