Hong Kong : A group of protestors which gathered outside the Japanese consulate here to mark the 70th anniversary of the Nanjing massacre Thursday called for a formal apology from the Japanese government for the genocide.
More than 300,000 people were killed in the 1937 Japanese invasion of the then capital of China.
A group of mostly pro-Beijing groups and organisations took part in the protest outside the Japanese consulate in Hong Kong’s Central district.
One of the protest leaders, Choy So-yuk said, “It was a truly brutal massacre and we demand that the Japanese government apologize formally.”
The Nanjing Massacre of Dec 13, 1937, and Japan’s refusal to apologise for it formally, has been the source of bitterness between the two countries ever since.
