Roadside blast kills 1 police officer in Afghanistan

Kabul, Afghanistan : A roadside blast hit a police vehicle in eastern Afghanistan, killing one officer and wounding three others, an official said Monday.

The explosion happened in the Wata Pur district of Kunar province on Sunday, said the provincial police chief, Abdul Jalal Jalal.

Also Sunday, police clashed with Taliban militants in the Gelan district of central Ghazni province, killing a local insurgent leader and two of his bodyguards, said Khan Mohammad, Ghazni’s police chief.
There were no casualties among Afghan security forces, Mohammad said.

This year has been Afghanistan’s most violent since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion drove the Taliban from power. More than 6,300 people, mostly militants, have been killed in insurgency-related violence, according to an Associated Press count.
