In statements to the Palestinian radio, Abbas said: "The Palestinian people are extremely happy over the release of Johnston, who is a friend to the Palestinian people, and we congratulate Johnston's family, the British people and government on his release."

He said the Palestinian government and people strongly condemned the kidnapping which lasted for four months and tried all negotiation options for Johnston's safe release.

Abbas said Johnston was kidnapped by an outlawed armed group and called for the quick elimination of such groups that feed on hatred and violence.

He said his government is ready to work on restoring security and stability to the Palestinian people and those working on Palestinian lands.

Johnston was released early Wednesday by members of the Army of Islam in Gaza.
