Pak FM leaves for Washington to review cooperation

Islamabad : Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri left for the United States on Saturday for talks to review cooperation in various fields with a view to further deepening cooperation in areas of common interest, an official statement said.

    "The visit provides a useful opportunity to review the progress made in the U.S.-Pakistan strategic partnership which was affirmed during President Bush's visit to Islamabad in March 2006 focusing on the process of building a broad-based, long term and sustainable relationship and progress in various tracks in the field of economy, education, science and technology and energy," a statement issued by Pakistani foreign ministry said.

    Both sides will talk about "the whole gamut of bilateral relations" including funding for the sustainable development plan and establishing reconstruction opportunity zones in Pakistani tribal areas, said the statement.

    They will also discuss cooperation in counter-terrorism, situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan's composite dialogue with India, the Middle East peace process and Iraq, it said.

    Kasuri will begin his hectic schedule of talks on Monday and hold talks with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, National Security Adviser Stephen Headley and Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez.
